Pictographic Creative Offer New Services After Closing Deals on the Tradeshow Floor

Like most small businesses implementing off-the-cusp ideas and putting relationships first, Peter Arkell and his team had to go through a few iterations before they attended the Aboriginal Business Match (ABM) as Pictographic Creative. We had the chance to witness the evolutionary nature since ABM West in 2015.

“Derek Mitchell and myself attended as Coast Salish Technologies,” recalls Peter, Design Lead. “At the time it was managed IT services, data wiring and technical consulting, among other things.”

Meeting decision makers from Semiahmoo First Nation to Kwikwetlem First Nation gave Peter the market intelligence that Nations were looking for more than just technical support. So last year, the team attended as Pictographic Creative, a company offering design, branding and communications services. Peter and his team closed two deals on the tradeshow floor: one with Nak’azdli Whut’en to design the Nation’s logo and another contract to provide a website for a Coast Salish Nation.

“We’re designing it from scratch – it’s very exciting,” says Peter, saying that being closely connected to Kwantlen First Nation allows them to have a clientele that trusts they will be “mindful of how [they] portray culture.”

Since these successes at ABM West, the Pictographic Creative team, in search for their next cutting edge project, kept their eyes on the horizon – not knowing that they would soon be changing it.

“We’ve been getting into digital billboard advertising,” announces Peter, detailing that two 10 x 20 displays will soon be seen on Lougheed Highway (Highway 7). “We’re setting up the foundations as we speak.”

The decision to move to digital advertising stemmed from a look at what was being done on Kwantlen Traditional Territory at the time.

“There were static billboards that we had been getting revenue from but it was felt that we could do better,” Peter explains. “Once the switch is flipped on these digital billboards – Pictographic will be responsible for advertising and managing all aspects of it.”

The two digital billboards will offer customers an advertising medium that is otherwise unavailable in the immediate area and marks a new service in the company’s toolbox.
